‘The Gardening Club’ is a new musical written by two student writers and directors, named Bella Wright and Carleigh McRitchie, and they are both studying music at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts.

The musical is based on contraceptive pill history in the 1960s when married women were the only people the birth control pill was accessible and available to. Our musical takes place in the year 1960 in Savannah, Georgia, where six women start an illegal distribution of the pill, using their gardening club as a cover-up. The musical discusses important topics from pleasure, self-discovery, shame, and first times to the politics of equality and state control over women’s bodies.

As a company, we believe that all of the topics we discuss in the musical are still relevant to today’s society.
