Eccleston Lane Ends Primary School pupils have been working with visual artist Ruta Staseviciute to decorate an egg as part of the Pysanka Egg Display.

The St Helens egg, called Vision, reflects Ukrainian culture and traditions as well as a nod to the borough itself.

Ruta explains: “Glass is a massively important part of St Helens’ heritage so we chose a stained-glass design for our egg. After discussing what message we wanted to send out to Ukraine and the rest of the world, we decided on unity for the theme.

“The name is not only linked to Eurovision and stained-glass vision but also the children’s visions of love, happiness and hope.

“It was really important to me that the egg design wasn’t just inspired by the children but that their artwork was actually featured so each child designed their own triangle which was then applied to the egg. The children drew pictures of activities that bring people together such as playing on the beach and sharing pizza, as well as symbols of hope and joy such as sunshine, rainbows, hearts and flowers.

“It was an absolute joy working with the children. They were so creative and loved getting stuck in and learning about the dip dye technique. I hope they have gone away with an insight into what goes into creating a piece of public art but also a greater understanding of unity.”
