Merseyside Police is offering a warm welcome to the thousands of visitors expected to head to Liverpool and the Wirral this weekend (Friday 25 May – Monday, 28 May) for the Tall Ships Festival and offering advice to make sure they have a great time and enjoy the event safely.

Superintendent Mark Wiggins said: “We are anticipating Liverpool will be exceptionally busy over the Bank Holiday weekend with a variety of different events and activities planned across the city,

“There is a whole programme of events planned around the Tall Ships festival which we know will attract large crowds to the waterfronts and dock area in both Liverpool and Wirral.

“We want people to have a safe and enjoyable time and make sure the weekend is memorable for all the right reasons which is why we are offering some tips and advice to ensure everybody’s day out goes smoothly.

“Visitors to the event can help us by giving themselves plenty of time to get to the city and arriving in good time so they can make the most of the celebrations. I would also advise people to check how they are travelling to and from the city centre and where they can park in advance as well as how they will get home.

“While you’re out and about, keep your purse and phone hidden – keep your handbags close to you, ensure they are fastened securely and kept closed at all times to prevent easy access.  Those carrying wallets are reminded to keep them out of sight and reach, perhaps within an inside jacket pocket

“Merseyside Police constantly reviews its staffing levels for any large-scale public events and visitors can expect to see high visibility policing throughout the weekend both on the waterfront on both sides of the river and the city centre.

“They may also see an armed police presence but I want to reassure the public that this is not in response to any direct threat aimed at any of the events, but is part of our national response at such busy events and will provide a visible reassurance for the thousands of people who will come to enjoy our fabulous city during the weekend. We will also have plain clothes officers in the area to allow us to identify anyone intent on any form of criminality which may ruin such a great weekend for people.

“I would also advise people who may consume alcohol over the weekend at the events or within the night time economy areas to ensure they limit the amount they drink to ensure they do not leave themselves vulnerable and so they do not have to cut their own enjoyment or that of friends short.”
