As part of the 2019 Year of the Pig Chinese New Year celebrations, a sculpture created by local Chinese arts organisation, Pagoda Arts and artist, Barbara Disney, will be on display at the Museum of Liverpool from February 1st until February 28th.

Last year, Pagoda Arts set the Pigsy Challenge, a project to create a sculpture using recycled lucky money envelopes and the traditional art of paper folding, Origami. These little red envelopes represent good luck for the year ahead and are a traditional gift given during Chinese New Year.

With the help of over 10,000 volunteers and 30 organisations between Liverpool and Hong Kong, Pagoda Arts have collected and folded 120,000 paper envelopes into delicate origami fish, butterflies, lanterns and zodiac animals. The sculpture is based on ‘Pigsy’, a greedy and mischievous character in the 16th century classic Chinese novel, Journey to the West.
