Large artworks made entirely of sustainable bamboo will be showcased in Liverpool for a one-day, FREE family-friendly festival.

Imagine Bamboo is Everywhere will take over Great George Square in Chinatown on Sunday 20 August and will feature the intricate, creations of local artists including windmills, giant butterflies, bikes, bridges and other impressive structures. And what makes it even more special, the Borinda bamboo being used is originally from mountainous Tibet, but has been brought to the UK by a botanist working for the University of Liverpool and grown at Ness Botanical Gardens.

Along with the incredible work on show there will also be street theatre, performances from the Bamboo Orchestra as well as ‘have-a-go’ music and craft workshops and facepainting – all taking place from 11am to 4pm.

The event is part of a Liverpool City Region (LCR) Cultural Events Programme which has already seen workshops take place across the six boroughs, bringing together residents of all ages, emerging climate leaders, community groups, academics, engineers and artists to explore the importance of bamboo and how this important sustainable material is used in design, construction, green innovation, farming and carbon capture.

Culture Liverpool is the lead producer, and throughout August the artworks will tour each borough. The team is working with independent creative director Orit Azaz and art specialists Imagineer Productions, who last worked in the city when they brought The Bridge to Walton as one of the first post-Covid community celebration events in 2021.

Imagine Bamboo is Everywhere is funded by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and follows on from the Lost Castles and Constellations LCR Cultural Events projects that were held in the city region in 2018 and 2019.

The event on the 20 August will take place at the same time as the Sea Festival, which is a celebration of East South East Asian communities and culture.

Liverpool’s Cabinet Member for Health Wellbeing and Culture, Councillor Harry Doyle, said:

“I’ve had a sneak peek of the installations and they are stunning – we’re so lucky to have so many talented artists on our doorstep.

“We know that people are always looking to fill their diaries during the summer holidays, and this is the perfect family-friendly event where you can enjoy what’s on offer and get involved. And best of all, it’s completely free which we know is massively important at the moment.

“We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Liverpool City Region to bring this cultural event to as many people as possible. It’s not the first time Culture Liverpool has led on producing creative events which reach a much wider regional audience, and it’s really rewarding to see residents and visitors engage in the activities on offer and embrace the culture on offer.”

Creative Director of Imagine Bamboo is Everywhere, Orit Azaz, said:

“We hope that lots of people will come along to the free Imagine Bamboo is Everywhere events this August.

“We’re planning a programme of free family-friendly outdoor activities, with giant bamboo structures, playful performances, music, circus workshops and crafting. You can run away with the bamboo circus, then have a go at making your own creation in our bamboo crafting zone. It will be great fun and a real talking point!”
