Bridge to Bamboo was a series of community events that took place between 2021 and 2023, with the aim of bringing people together in a fun and creative way.
In 2021, ‘Bridge’ became the setting for an extraordinary large outdoor performance in the heart of County District. Over three days, Culture Liverpool in partnership with Imagineer hosted a series of free pop-up events including gravity-defying circus acrobatics, dance, comedy, theatre and live music. All elements of this event were inspired by local people’s stories, to create a thrilling and moving montage of courage, compassion and humour needed to bridge a divide. This event formed part of £1M County District Regeneration Scheme (LCR Town Centre Fund) and provided ongoing engagement with the community through bridge kit workshops hosted by local organisations.
2022 saw the Bridge series continued, this time exploring the issues of sustainability in collaboration with Imagineer, 12 artists, community groups and partners from across the Liverpool City Region. Individuals were invited to take part in a series of ‘Taking Root’ workshops to question their relationship with the environment and the potential for bamboo to tackle the climate crisis and contribute to a more sustainable future. The results of which were showcased at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Third in the series was ‘Imagine Bamboo is Everywhere’, which took over the Liverpool City Region with family-friendly outdoor events incorporating giant bamboo structures, performances, circus, music and crafting. Beginning in spring 2023, this wonderful programme brought together residents, young people and emerging climate leaders, community groups and organisers including partners, academics, engineers and artists – culminating in six outdoor events in each of the city boroughs throughout August.
