The Power of Words Through Storytelling & Shared Histories
Comprising arts, heritage, culture and community activists, Liverpool partners have spent months collaborating on Black History Month 2023. Black History is not just for October. Liverpool BHM23 uses this month on a dedicated platform to shine a light on Black creativity, heritage and achievement and the incredible work that goes on in the city all year round. Once again, a host of arts and cultural organisations, universities and businesses have created an impressive programme for all.
Here you will find a webpage containing all of the month’s events, in one place and easy to navigate. Excitingly this includes some new commissions made possible through the Liverpool City Fund and UK Shared Prosperity fund, including ‘Identity Crisis’ – a piece of autobiographical theatre, ‘It Takes a Quilt’ – a community project with Cohiba, Black film events and a new piece ‘Celebration’ by artist Faith Bebbington to sit within Liverpool Central Library.
This year has already been very busy in the city, with many events having already taken place including WoWFest, Africa Oyé’s music festival, a visit by the Mandela family for the official opening of the Nelson Mandela Memorial and so much more.
Last year, the city welcomed a visit from the US by Dr Julius Garvey MD, son of civil rights activist Rt. Honourable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. A special commission by Jernice Easthope was produced, reflecting on Black women in culture and how they are changing the world and WoWfest opened with Linton Kwesi Johnson. Other festivals included BlackFest, Liverpool Irish Festival and The Gravity Festival.
This year we celebrate The Power of Words Through Storytelling & Shared Histories. We invite you to join in as we meet and greet, debate, eat, sing, dance and watch films that capture the essence of Liverpool and celebrate the impact that Black arts events have on our local communities, young and older, creating meaningful opportunities to work, rest and play together. This is just another month to add to the many others where everyone can share, participate, and enjoy!
