RECLAIMING NARRATIVES
Comprising arts, heritage, culture and community activists, Liverpool partners have spent months collaborating on Black History Month 2024. Black History is not just for October. Liverpool BHM24 uses this month on a dedicated platform to shine a light on Black creativity, heritage and achievement and the incredible work that goes on in the city all year round. Once again, a host of arts and cultural organisations, universities and businesses have created an impressive programme for all.
Here you will find a webpage containing the month’s events, in one place and easy to navigate. Excitingly this includes some new commissions made possible through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, including Roots & Routes: Celebrating African Caribbean Migrants in Liverpool, Fixing Crowns: Celebrating Afro Hair on Black Children, The Black Femininity Project, Constitution, Lessons From Toxteth: A Cinematic Reflection on 1981 Liverpool Riots & The Path to Racial Justice, Be Inspired!, Remembering Shadow & Liverpool Caribbean Carnival, BASS (Black Activist Song Cycle) For Baritone and Legends, Myths & Rituals.
2024 has already been busy in the city, with many events having already taken place including WoWFest, Africa Oyé’s music festival and BlackFest.
Last year, Liverpool’s African Diasporic Filmmakers Network presented their online film archive ‘Custodians of Our Culture’, a new recycled sculpture by Faith Bebbingon, entitled ‘Celebration,’ took pride of place at Liverpool Central Library and Digital Immersive CiC showcased their ground-breaking digital art project ‘Icons Re-Imagined’. Other events included Slavery Remembrance Day and Liverpool Irish Festival.
This year we celebrate Reclaiming Narratives and invite you to join in. Come meet and greet, debate, eat, sing, dance and watch films that capture the essence of Liverpool and realise the impact that Black arts events have on our local communities, young and older, creating meaningful opportunities to work, rest and play together. This is just another month to add to the many others where everyone can share, participate, and enjoy!
