What’s it all about?

Join professional photographer Rachel Brewster-Wright for dot-art’s first socially distanced outdoor analogue photography course.

Analogue Adventures in the Park introduces participants to the use of traditional hands-on photographic techniques as a way of creating unique artistic images in response to the beautiful surroundings of Calderstones Park, in a relaxed and more mindful way.

Looking at the craft and handmade aspects of photography, you will learn how to combine science and art to create unique and beautiful work whilst learning more about how to simply operate a camera, allowing you to move away from ‘auto’!

Suitable for complete beginners who are new to photo making.

A range of safety measures have been introduced to keep everyone as safe and comfortable as possible. Please respect the current social distancing guidelines.

Participant numbers are limited to 6 per course. This will allow everyone to feel comfortable keeping a safe distance working outdoors. Each participant will need to bring their own materials, and will only handle their own work and tools throughout the course.

Your tutor will provide all of the materials for this course. She will be the only person to handle the materials before given to each individual and will be regularly sanitising and ensuring safety measures are adhered to.

Programme

Explore and capture your surroundings in Calderstones Park in Analogue Adventures.

Over 4 weeks, participants will embark on:

  • Guided photowalk(s) around Caldestones Park learning how to use vintage film cameras from 1940s – 1980s on photowalks to shoot rolls of black and white film (different formats available to discover).
  • Mix chemicals and coat materials by hand to create one-off colour-changing Victorian sunprint / cyanotype photograms from the collected objects, inspired by the nature around the site, using natural sunshine or specialist lamp(s) depending on weather conditions.
  • Use traditional photographic chemistry, techniques and vintage equipment to learn how to hand-process your own black & white film(s) and create final print(s) by combining modern technology and traditional processes.
