The Open Culture Winter Arts Market returns on Saturday 1 December, offering shoppers the chance to buy thousands of handmade artworks, crafts and design gifts in the lead up to Christmas. Over 200 independent artists, designers and makers will transform Liverpool Cathedral into a bustling arts market displaying thousands of colourful creations alongside an artisan food fair and vintage fair, with independent clothing designers also appearing for the first time.

This year Open Culture celebrate the tenth in the series of this special annual event! Come along to support local artists and makers and find perfect gifts for friends and family from artists, designers, makers, crafters, food producers, clothing designers and vintage sellers who will be selling a huge variety of handmade work, Just some of the thousands of items on offer include original screen prints, paintings, intricate jewellery, tableware, beauty products, woodwork, colourful decorations, accessories, textiles, photography, knitwear, hand poured candles plus food gifts, clothing and vintage at prices for all pockets.

Downstairs in the Cathedral’s Concert Room, a pop-up vintage and clothing fair will offer a range of vintage clothing, jewellery, handbags, homewares and vinyl alongside work from independent clothing designers.

Along the corridor in the dedicated food fair, local artisan food producers are on hand with delicious food and drink including chocolate, liqueurs, tea, jams, cake and much more.

For the first time and just in time to decorate your front door for December, Open Culture have invited the super talented Sarah and Abigail of Ewer-Roberts Flowers to the Winter Arts Market to show you how to create your very own natural Christmas Door Wreath from foraged festive foliage, fruits, spices and decorations, all of which are provided – no foraging required and suitable for complete beginners! Workshop places need to be pre-booked; tickets are just £38.50 and includes entry into the market. To book your place before they sell out please visit https://tinyurl.com/y8ukdhbo

“Open Culture’s Winter and Summer Arts Markets have grown enormously from our humble beginnings staging small art fairs outdoors in 2008, facing all the weather the North West could throw at us! This is our tenth Winter Arts Market and we’re so excited to hit this milestone in such a magnificent venue. There will be a variety of new artists and makers, alongside our audience’s favourites and the new addition of clothing designers amidst the Vintage Fair. Merseyside overflows with creativity and we’re always astounded by the variety, quality and uniqueness of what artists produce and we’re delighted to give shoppers the chance to buy their work and support local.” Charlotte Corrie, Open Culture Director (organisers)

A closer look at just a few of the stallholders this year:

Bob Wakelin Illustration (Liverpool)

Illustrator Bob Wakelin was a prolific designer of video game covers in the 80s and 90s. Bob worked mostly for Ocean and Imagine games, designing some of their most iconic covers. He also illustrated single covers, books and loads more! Bob sadly passed away in January 2018 and was always keen to get involved with the Winter Arts Market but just never found the time, so this year his wife Gill will be there to talk about his work and give people the opportunity to buy a piece of video game history.

Jenny Meehan – Hearts and Coronets (Liverpool)

Jenny creates unique toys and knitwear for babies, children and grown-ups. Designed and hand knitted in Liverpool, using only the finest pure merino wool and cashmere, she specialises in Fairisle, adding a modern twist to traditional patterns and designs.

Sonya Warscher – sonraclay (Southport)

sonraclay is an ever expanding collection of colourful, smiley faced ceramic pieces, which are inspired by British, Japanese and Scandinavian mid century potters. All unique characters are thoughtfully designed, hand built or thrown, glazed and fired by Sonya in her Southport studio, with the aim of bringing a bit of extra cheer to the home!

James Gallagher Furniture (Liverpool)

James hand makes wooden kids’ toys. All are painted with child safe paint, made from safe timbers, are finished with natural oils and bees wax and are eco-friendly. Using old fashioned techniques and tools, they can last years and are great for developing children’s imagination, shape/colour and sound perception.

Claire Troughton Jewellery (Cheshire)

Claire’s jewellery is inspired by the beauty she sees in nature with a focus on leaves, flowers and insects. Pieces are made in silver highlighted with 22ct gold plate or solid gold, giving them a delightful warmth. She established her business in 1996 and her studio has been located in Chester for the past 13 years.

Layla Ayaz – Glowhush (Wirral)

GlowHush sell high quality, vegan-friendly scented candles, wax melts and their exclusive contemporary wax melters, along with specially-created, long-lasting reed diffusers and car fragrancing products meaning the smell of GlowHush can follow you everywhere!  Their newly added bath care range will also be on sale and is paragon and SLS free and vegan friendly.

Katie Kenny – Squidges (Wirral)

Squidges produce luxury, mouth-watering treats including s’mores, brownies, tiffin, award-winning cookies, cookie pops & Rocky Road using only the finest ingredients – local, organic & fair trade. Not to be missed are Squidges Christmas Eve Boxes, which include ingredients to make your own cookies to leave out for Santa!
