Writing on the Wall (WoW) are incredibly excited to launch their brand-new children’s book Super Heroes: Diverse Stories for a Diverse World. After an incredible four-year project working with primary schools across Liverpool and acclaimed national writers, WoW’s book launch is finally here!

Aiming to change the narrative around representation within literature and offer brand new, diverse characters, the anthology contains stories, poems and illustrations promoting diversity, inclusion and a celebration of our different identities.

Super Heroes: Diverse Stories for a Diverse World features acclaimed national writers such as Amina Atiq, Yvonne Battle-Felton, Ashleigh Nugent, Helen Dring-Turner, Nathan Powell, Alex Swan, Katie and Kevin Tsang, Alan Gibbons, Cheryl Martin, Marie Basting, Jon Mayhew, Emme Lathan and Claire L. Heuchan.

The book will be launching throughout November across eight primary schools in partnership with WoW’s Super Heroes: Words are our Power project, St. Michael and All Angels, Broad Square, Banks Road, Blackmoor Park, Leamington, St. Cleopas, Holy Cross and Springwood Heath.

WoW’s team of superheroes will take to the playground, fighting off the evil bookworms that threaten our individuality and creativity.

The book will be available to buy from January 2022!

When it comes to representation in literature, the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education found that only 7% of children’s books published in the UK between 2017 and 2019 featured characters of colour.

WoW’s Co-Directors, Mike Morris and Madeline Heneghan, commented:

‘In all aspects of their lives, children live in a diverse world. However, this diversity is not reflected in their reading material. Writing on the Wall, as champions for diversity, believe it is essential that books reflect the world we live in to promote a healthier mindset, challenge racism and celebrate diversity. We are very proud that our Super Heroes: Words Are Our Power project has published Diverse Stories for a Diverse World – a pioneering book that will play a key role in the implementation of equality and inclusivity in children’s literature.’

Super Heroes: Diverse Stories for a Diverse World is presented by Writing on the Wall’s ‘Super Heroes: Words are our Power’ project, which aims to increase children’s imagination, confidence and resilience through creative writing.
