The story for 2019 continues and follows little Jingwei and her friend Piggy as they venture to the west.

Expanding on the 2017 and 2018 projections and to celebrate the Year of the Pig, the 20th Anniversary of the Twinning of Shanghai and Liverpool and the gifting of the Chinese Arch to Liverpool, the story for 2019 follows little Jingwei and her friend Pigsy as they venture to the west.

Echoing the classic Chinese novel ‘Journey to the West’ and the Chinese New Year story of the ‘Great Race’, the projections featured Pigsy, Monkey, scorpions, dragons and the animals of the Zodiac.

Jingwei and Pigsy were on a mission to present the culture of Shanghai and China to the rest of the world and Liverpool. The lumiere explored the similarities between the two cities, the waterfront, the river, the dazzling architecture, the musical heritage, and Chinatown.

To commemorate the similarities Pigsy, Jingwei and the animals of the ‘Great Race’, race to build the Chinese Arch, but who will be first?

The lumiere show was accompanied by live performance from The Everyman & Playhouse Theatres in partnership with the Liverpool Confucius Institute, pyrotechnics and a newly commissioned soundtrack by award-winning musician and composer, Jah Wobble.
