dot-art and Bruntwood Works are coming together to create an exciting new platform for public art in Liverpool – using flags!
An open call is being launched for artists based in the Liverpool City Region to design the first flag for the project. This will be flown for 6 months, after which a second artist will be commissioned. The selected artist will receive a fee of £500 and a one year artist membership with dot-art.
The flagpole in question is mounted on the Grade II listed 1 Dale Street, built in 1858 for the Liverpool and London Insurance Company and currently home to RBS. The large central flagpole, which is mounted above the main entrance and rises to the second floor, has been unused for many years. This project aims to bring it back to life with a newly commissioned contemporary artwork flown as a flag, every 6 months.
Each commission will address a specific issue currently faced by society and will start with addressing the Black Lives Matter movement. As such ‘Flag It Up’ are looking to commission a black artist and are pleased to be able to offer this opportunity as we go into Black History Month in October along with a series of anti-racism workshops in secondary schools delivered by sculptor Faith Bebbington.
Black History Month 2020 is more vital than ever. The Black Lives Matter protests in response to the racist murder of George Floyd and the Corona pandemic have laid bare deep structural inequalities. Black communities and anti-racists across the globe are demanding change. The Creative Organisations of Liverpool (COoL) recognises the role that the arts can play in affecting that change and have come together to promote equality and justice through a range of art forms and to stand in solidarity with all of our communities facing racial discrimination this October. As proud COoL members, Flag It Up forms part of dot-art’s contribution to this vital and vibrant programme of events.
Instructions for Artists:
- To apply, please complete the submission form here.
- You will NOT need to produce a full design, just samples of previous work and any ideas you have of how you would approach the commission.
- The selected artist will need to produce a completely new and original piece of work.
- The final artwork will need to be suitable for reproduction on an 8 x 5 foot / 244 x 152cm flag and have visual impact from ground level.
- The original art work and copyright will remain the property of the artist.
- The deadline for submissions is midnight Sunday 11th October.
