Black Lives Matter began as a hashtag, a social media campaign in response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman in 2013 for the murder of 17 year old Trayvon Martin. It was the start of a new form of activism and a new social (media) movement. After the devastating murder of George Floyd last year, the issue of police brutality, racial violence and prejudice against Black people reached fever pitch. The lives and experiences of Black people across the US and Europe were discussed and debated on a scale never before seen.
