As ‘This is Shanghai’ draws to a close, a series of unique performance pieces will be taking place in Mann Island’s Winter Gardens offering a chance for visitors to take part in an internationally acclaimed artwork.

This is a free event at Mann Island, outside Open Eye Gallery on Friday 7 September from 4pm. and you are invited to participate in a unique performance piece from an internationally renowned artist. Reserve your space here.

Shanghai artist, Xu Zhen’s sculptural installation piece ‘Optimizing’ takes the instantly recognisable Stonehenge, and shrinks it, giving the stones a new purpose as a platform for martial arts training focused on balance and movement. From 4pm, martial arts experts will perform on top of the stones, activating the piece and transforming the sculpture into a practical space.

Interspersed throughout the evening will also be interactive workshops based upon Zhen’s performance piece ‘Physique of Consciousness,’ open to everyone of all ages and the first cultural fitness exercise ever made. The audience is invited to take part in a choreographed set of movements inspired by shared elements of martial arts, ritual and dance.

Open Eye Gallery will be extending opening hours until 7pm showing work from George Osodi and Madiha Aijaz as part of Liverpool Biennial 2018 ‘Beautiful world, where are you?’.
