On April 30th, 2022, Centre for the Study of International Slavery (CSIS) will host one of a two events focused on better understanding the Liverpool’s concerns regarding slavery, its legacies, and its representation in city organisations. The session invites local and international participants to discuss how universities can support co-created and community-led initiatives. This co-produced project intends to move beyond borders and break down barriers to learning about slavery and racism by collectively re-interpreting spaces at the university and around the city, which that have been built on the systems, institutions, and inequalities created by slavery. This event will advance the international anti-racism conversation and activism within the university and heritage sectors.

Participants will visit 19 Abercromby Square, previously the residence a cotton merchant Charles Prioleau, and discuss the site’s links to slavery. We will then connect to a heritage site and curator in America, through a live link, for a virtual tour of an exhibit related to slavery and conversation about the history and presentation of the site, exhibits, and their community-led projects. Dr Laura Sandy (Director of CSIS) will then open a discussion about the potential for 19 Abercromby Square as a co-produced space for resources, exhibitions, performances, and community use. As well as highlighting Liverpool’s role in the slave trade and slavery dependent economies (such as the cotton industry), this event aims to link the city’s heritage sites and its people to international sites and audiences, bringing them together to discuss slavery and the global fight against racism and inequality.

The core of this event is co-production and ‘shared heritage’. By creating an international virtual learning space, connecting slavery sites which are historically linked but geographically distinct, we hope to broaden the international debates about representation and anti-racism.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided to all participants.
