Writing on the Wall and Liverpool Record Office secured funding from Archives Revealed to catalogue the archives of the Liverpool 8 Law Centre and LARCAA (Liverpool Anti-Racist Community Arts Association), two ground breaking community organisations dedicated to fighting against racism in all its forms.

There will be opportunities to see items from both archive collections showing their pioneering work.

The L8 Defence Committee was quickly formed to monitor police brutality and unwarranted arrests in Liverpool 8 during the uprisings in July 1981. Their work continued, collecting witness statements and producing newsletters. In 1982 the L8 Law Centre was formed to provide legal advice to the community. Over time their campaigning and casework grew to fight injustice in housing, employment, welfare benefits and immigration.

LARCAA was established in 1988 by a diverse group of artists, teachers, community workers and local government officers. Their aim was to address issues of racism, locally and nationally through the medium of visual arts as well as providing a platform for local Black artists. LARCAA staff worked on hundreds of projects, from exhibitions and graphic design to workshops and residencies in schools.

Both organisations had representation on local boards and committees, along with speaking at national events and conferences on their anti-racist work.
