Jingwei & the Ocean Projections

Jingwei & the Ocean Projections

Chinese New Year Lumiere: Jingwei & the Ocean is a spectacular light and sound show taking place in Liverpool’s Chinatown as part of this year’s Chinese New Year celebration.

The projections are based on the story of the emperor’s daughter who after perishing at sea, transformed into a bird and endeavoured to fill the ocean with twigs and stones to prevent anyone else from meeting the same fate. The story is being adapted to show how Chinatowns in Liverpool and around the world have developed from the seeds sown and the pebbles laid by the earliest Chinese settlers, and how these small ‘islands’ have developed into the vibrant and diverse communities we see today.

Keep your eyes peeled for several of the characters from the augmented reality trail around the city making an appearance in the projections including Poon Lim, Sun Yet San, a famous footballer, the left behind children and the sailors. Find out more about the Augmented Reality Trail, watch the videos and find out how you can get involved on the AR page here.

The bespoke show will take place on the iconic Chinese Arch, Black-E and The Arch (formerly the Scandinavian Hotel) in Chinatown. The soundtrack to the show will be provided by a specially-commissioned piece by Jah Wobble with members of the Pagoda Youth Orchestra, featuring a surprise guest to be announced. The projections will be joined by an Augmented Reality trail that will tell the Jingwei & the Ocean story and highlight individuals in the history of the Chinese community in Liverpool and beyond.
