Join Professor Mike Boyle, director of the ‘Go Higher’ programme at Liverpool University, writer and historian Tony Wailey and Madeline Heneghan, Co-Director of Writing on the Wall for the launch of From Pitt Street to Granby an exciting new book that shines a light on this fascinating and renowned area of Liverpool. The book extends the themes of the best-selling What’s Your Granby Story?, with tales of laughter, tenacity and aspiration, featuring interviews and first-hand accounts and stories of how a community moved up the hill and stayed there tenaciously to live their lives and to illustrate the links and extent of Liverpool’s diverse maritime culture. This new volume traces the roots of the Liverpool 8 black and minority communities from its original home around Pitt Street, the original ‘Sailortown’ in the southern Liverpool docklands and its first moves towards Granby in the inter-war period.
Professor Mike Boyle is a social and economic historian and for many years, was the director of the ‘Go Higher’ Programme at Liverpool University.
Tony Wailey worked as a seafarer and construction worker for ten years. He later studied modern history and wrote a thesis on the Liverpool Seamen. For 25 years he was an advisor to mature students in Universities and Colleges of Adult Education. He now works as a freelance writer. He has published five pocket sized novels. His latest collection of poetry is scheduled to be published in 2018.
Madeline Heneghan became WoW’s first full-time Festival Director in 2006. Her expertise in diversity and audience development have been the driving force behind WoW’s growth and its diverse audiences. Most recently Madeline and has co-written and published Great War to Race Riots about the 1919 Liverpool events that led to the murder of Charles Wotten.
