November 2018 sees the centenary of the end of World War 1, but more poignantly, it marks 100 years since the death of locally-educated war poet Wilfred Owen. Wilfred attended the Birkenhead Institute Grammar School, as did Dean Johnson, the writer of this stage musical dedicated to Wilfred.
Bullets and Daffodils is the world’s first musical production to be based on war poetry of Wilfred Owen. These farewell performances star Nicholas Ball, well known for his portrayal of James Hazell in the iconic 70’s detective series Hazell, and currently gracing our screens in the medical drama Holby City.
The show recasts Wilfred Owen’s poems as contemporary songs, and is billed as A Voice Reborn. The script contains contributions from Dr Who writer David Quantick and music from Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour.
The show was the subject of a BBC documentary, following its development from Birkenhead to London’s West End. All 3 singles released from the show have received airplay on BBC Radio 2.
The poetry of Wilfred Owen, for so long the reserve of school classrooms, is reborn as contemporary entertainment in this unique musical theatre production. As the centenary of World War One continues, Owen is fast becoming the poster boy of war poetry.
Owen remains a controversial figure. He comes second only to Shakespeare as our most famous national poet. His story remains untold and is one of the most captivating in recent history.
